You buy what trends in China
A Chinese bestseller list tells you what sells in Shenzhen. It says nothing about a 50°C car interior, a Minnesota winter, a ten-person household, or a Ramadan buying window.
ISSUE 01 · 2026-10-24 · 5 PRODUCTS · 5 MARKETS · STATUS: OPEN
Every week, five products that already move in your market — with real 1688 quotations, full landed-cost math, and the certification you need before the container leaves. No affiliate links. No supplier commissions. No recycled lists.
COVERAGE GCC ·deepest / United States / European Union / United Kingdom / Southeast Asia
The system, not a single market
The screening logic is identical everywhere: demand first, real supply second, compliance gate third, unit economics fourth. What changes is the parameter set — tax, certification, labelling, logistics. That parameter set is the product.
Export figure is the 2024 national total. Saudi figures are 2025 market data. Destination-market parameters below are framework-level and must be confirmed per HS code and category before you order.
| Market | Import duty | VAT / GST | Key certification | Labelling | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GCC — KSA / UAE | 5% common tariff* | 15% KSA / 5% UAE | SABER PC+SC · G-mark · EQM | Arabic retail label | SC issued ≥72h before arrival; auto parts watched |
| United States | 0–25% + Section 301 add-ons | sales tax by state | FCC · CPSC · UL · FDA (food contact) | English + country of origin | de minimis changes; children's goods strictly tested |
| European Union | 0–17% typical* | 19–27%, IOSS for parcels | CE · RoHS · REACH · GPSR | EU language(s) + importer address | EPR (packaging / WEEE); GPSR responsible person |
| United Kingdom | 0–14% typical* | 20% | UKCA · UK EPR | English + importer address | UKCA vs CE transition; EPR registration before sale |
| Southeast Asia | 0–30% by country* | GST 7–12% / VAT 8–10% | SNI (ID) · BPS (PH) · TISI (TH) | local language by market | fragmented rules — each country is its own project |
*Framework-level ranges, not a rate for your product. Duty depends on the 12-digit HS code; VAT and certification depend on category and destination. Every issue re-quotes the parameters it uses and states the assumptions — the numbers are a screening tool, not a quotation.
The problem
A Chinese bestseller list tells you what sells in Shenzhen. It says nothing about a 50°C car interior, a Minnesota winter, a ten-person household, or a Ramadan buying window.
Origin charges, duty, VAT, destination handling and marketplace fulfilment routinely add 60–120% on top of the ex-factory price. Most margins quoted in seller groups stop at the freight line.
Whether it is SABER in Saudi Arabia, CE in the EU or FCC in the US — the certificate has to exist before the goods arrive. There is no fix-at-the-border path. The shipment becomes sunk cost.
The cheapest quote is often a trading company that cannot answer one question about the production line — and disappears the moment you need a remake.
The method
What already sells on the marketplaces that matter in your destination — Amazon, noon, TikTok Shop, local leaders — how seasonality looks there, and what the three-star reviews say the failure mode is.
The same or functionally identical product on 1688, with a real ex-factory quotation from a supplier we can hold to a remake.
Certification for the destination market, whether a religious or ingredient rule is triggered, what the label has to carry, and whether the battery or liquid makes it a problem.
Landed cost per unit against a realistic retail band — after duty, VAT, commission and fulfilment, and again after a 10% ad-spend assumption. A product that only works with zero ad spend is not a product.
What that filtering actually looks like
The signature calculation
Issue 01, product one — a foldable car windshield sun shade, sold into the GCC as our flagship market. The same arithmetic runs for every product in every market we cover; only the rates change.
of the retail price is the factory. Everything else is logistics, tax, platform and traffic — exactly the part nobody quotes in seller groups.
landed cost per unit before it is even listed. Price this product under AED 45 and the margin is gone.
that decide viability in every market: retail ≥ landed × 4.5, and ad cost ≤ one third of price. Fail either and the product is not a product.
The differentiation
Chinese supply-side information is designed for Chinese operating conditions. Almost none of it transfers — to the Gulf, to Minnesota or to Jakarta. Every product passes this checklist before it is costed. The gates are public; the judgement stays in the paid brief.
Inside an issue
Issue 01, product one, sold into the GCC — our flagship market. This is the level of detail a subscriber gets, five times a week.
Why the demand exists here and not everywhere: parked-car interiors routinely exceed what buyers in Europe or East Asia ever experience. That turns a $10 accessory into a near-universal, recurring need.
| Goods (CNY 25 × 300) | 1,056 |
| Origin charges | 120 |
| Ocean freight (1.5 CBM × $95) | 143 |
| Insurance 0.3% | 4 |
| CIF Jebel Ali | 1,323 |
| Duty 5% | 66 |
| Destination charges | 200 |
| Last-mile | 80 |
| Landed cost, ex-VAT | 1,669 |
| Landed cost per unit | $5.56 |
| Selling price | $16.10 |
| Marketplace commission @12% | −1.93 |
| Fulfilment (small standard) | −3.50 |
| Landed unit cost | −5.56 |
| Gross margin before ads | 5.11 (32%) |
| Ad spend @10% of price | −1.61 |
| Net after ads | 3.50 (22%) |
VAT (UAE 5% ≈ $69, KSA 15% ≈ $208 on this shipment) is recoverable if you are registered — cash-flow, not cost.
Low unit price means fulfilment fees eat the margin — below AED 45 retail it stops working. It is also a summer product: sell-through collapses outside roughly April–September, so plan inventory so you are not carrying stock into winter.
Wind-rated pole spec, coated fabric, and the exact pack size that decides whether the fulfilment tier kills you.
Landed cost per set, exit math, and the 20GP break-even point.
Food-grade material reports, set configuration for multi-generational households, and the Ramadan inventory window.
Why the certification gate is the entire business — and the order quantity below which this product cannot work.
The alcohol-free constraint, why non-electric wins, and where the margin actually is.

FAQ
No, and they are not meant to be. They are screening estimates built from published freight rate tables and the destination market’s standard duty and VAT rates, with every assumption stated on the page. Use them to decide what to investigate; confirm with a live quotation before you wire money.
No. Nobody honestly can. What we do is show you the demand evidence, the real ex-factory quotation and the full cost, so the decision you make is informed rather than a guess.
Five parameter sets are maintained and re-quoted every issue: the GCC (KSA and UAE — our deepest coverage), the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Southeast Asia. If you sell somewhere else, tell us — the method transfers, and we will tell you honestly whether we can hold the parameter set to the same standard.
Publicly observable listing activity on the marketplaces that matter in the destination market, category rankings, search trend data by country, and review content — specifically the one-to-three-star reviews, which is where the real failure modes live.
Yes, as a one-off deep report or as ongoing Strategy-tier work. We identify suppliers, compare real quotations, coordinate samples and route the certification for your destination market. We do not place orders on your behalf unless it is agreed separately.
Never. That is the fastest way to turn research into a sales pitch. We quote suppliers because we believe in the number, not because they pay us.
